TEVA Amlodipine (commonly known generic of Norvasc) is a prescription calcium channel blocker used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and manage chest pain (angina). By relaxing blood vessels, it makes it easier for the heart to pump blood. It is taken once daily and is highly effective for long-term cardiovascular health.
Uses
Hypertension: Lowers high blood pressure to help prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney failure.
Reduces the risk of hospitalization for angina and heart surgery in CAD patients.
Common Side Effects
Swollen ankles or feet: The most common side effect (5-10%), caused by the relaxation of blood vessels allowing fluid into lower leg tissues. This can be managed by elevating your legs
Headaches: May occur initially; over-the-counter painkillers can help.
Dizziness or flushing: Due to decreased blood pressure and widened blood vessels.
Pounding heartbeat (palpitations): Can occur as your body adjusts.
Important Precautions
Dosage: Typically prescribed in 5 mg or 10 mg tablets. It is long-acting, providing 24-hour coverage
Not a rescue medication: Amlodipine prevents chest pain if taken regularly, but it will not stop an angina attack once it has started.
Avoid Grapefruit: Grapefruit and grapefruit juice can increase the amount of amlodipine in your bloodstream and should generally be avoided or limited.
Interactions: Tell your doctor about all other medications you take, especially other blood pressure drugs, simvastatin, or medication for erectile dysfunction.
Medical History: Caution is required if you have severe low blood pressure, liver or kidney disease, or certain heart conditions
